Heavy rainfall has struck far north and northwest Queensland, with areas such as South Mission Beach and Catley Beach recording over 300mm of rain in a single day. The downpour has led to flooding, prompting the deployment of SES crews to assist with sandbagging and livestock protection.

The Australian Federal Government has announced flood assistance for five council areas to support road repairs and disaster operations. A major flood watch is in place for the Flinders River, and authorities warn that cleanup efforts will continue for weeks after the rain subsides.

Bureau is predicting the system could weaken by tomorrow afternoon, but that doesn't mean the rain will definitely stop. The downpour has hit much of far north and northwest Queensland, with heavy rainfall recorded as far south as Townsville. South Mission Beach recorded more than 300mm in just 24 hours, taking their total for two days to almost 700mm. Catley Beach has also been inundated, recording 362mm in just one day. SES crews are out helping residents sandbag and save livestock. The Federal Government has announced flood assistance for five council areas to help with roads, fixing roads rather, major infrastructure and other disaster operations. They are currently suffering and there is a major flood watch on the Flinders River. So they are areas in which Australians will be thinking of them as we approach the new year.
