All right, and there are concerns in Colorado about a provision that was tucked into the funding bill that ended the government shutdown. Denver 7's Lauren Lennon breaks down the new restrictions and how that could affect Coloradans. Hemp is being redefined at the federal level after President Trump signed a bill to reopen the government Wednesday, leaving some upset. They're using a sledgehammer when they ought to be using a scalpel. The changes in the bill now make hemp products with more than 0.4 milligrams of THC per container illegal. Shannon Donnelly, a professor of cannabis at MSU Denver says this is detrimental. It would completely wipe out that industry and it no longer would exist. It isn't a realistic measure for where the industry is today because we have a thriving almost $28 billion hemp industry. Before these limitations under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp products were legal if they contained less than 0.3% of THC per weight. Donnelly says these changes will certainly be felt here in Colorado. Say you're an individual who maybe shops at liquor stores and likes one milligram hemp beverages, those could also be off the shelves. We had businesses who bet on hemp. They left the regulated marijuana industry just the last year to say, hey, I'm going to go big into the hemp market, and that might have been a bad choice for them. But not everyone agrees with Donnelly. Frankly, very dangerous. Luke Niferatos with Smart Approaches to Marijuana says he's thrilled. This is a fantastic win for families, for children, for public health professionals, for so many people in the law enforcement community who have been raising the alarm over the last six years about today's high potency.
