The Milwaukee County Zoo has welcomed Zuri, a 15-year-old female eastern black rhino, to its new rhino exhibit. Zuri arrived from the Cincinnati Zoo and is expected to play a role in the conservation of her critically endangered species.

Zoo staff plan to introduce Zuri to a male rhino in the spring, with hopes that they will breed. However, with a gestation period of 15 months, any potential rhino calves would not be expected until well after the initial introduction. The zoo has also made improvements to its facilities, including a renovated penguin habitat, and remains open to visitors throughout most of the year.

Today, we're getting a closer look at the chances of maybe getting some baby rhinos at the zoo. Our kid O'Shea takes us inside a brand new exhibit. So, Joan, we're here at the brand new rhino exhibit. Tell us about Zuri, who's behind us right now. Zuri is our new female eastern black rhino. She's 15 years old, and she has come here from Cincinnati Zoo, and we're hoping that she will be a mother to some calves in the future. I know that's quite the process, and we've got to make sure that everybody likes each other. They haven't even met yet, so let's not rush anything here. But can you share a little bit of that timeline with us and what that might look like? We're hoping to introduce the two rhinos in the springtime, and hopefully, if they get along well and they do breed, we're still looking at a gestation period of over a year. So, you know, don't expect babies next summer. Don't start naming the rhinos yet. No, not yet. Rhinos are pregnant for 15 months. It's quite a long time. But, you know, fingers crossed, in the future, we will have some rhino calves. We're really hoping we do. You know, I just returned back to my home city of Milwaukee, and it's great to be back home. But if people haven't been to the zoo in a while, I haven't been here in a while. Why is now such a great time to visit? Because of this new barn. This new barn is definitely, I mean, I'm really biased because this is where I work in this area. This new barn is a huge improvement for our zoo. It's really exciting. And we've also had some improvements up at the front at the new penguin exhibit. That's really nice. The penguin habitat's been renovated. We have some other great indoor areas that you can see the animals. So, I mean, winter, a lot of people think the zoo is not open in the winter, but we're still open. We're still here, and we're trying to add more indoor experiences so that people can visit your own. Well, we did the math on the walk over here. We believe 362 days a year.
