A new report from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) highlights a concerning trend in the rise of antisemitism in the United States. The report indicates that in the past year, there were over 9,000 incidents of antisemitic assault, harassment, and vandalism - marking an all-time high in recorded cases. This marks the fourth consecutive year of increases, according to ADL's CEO and National Director, Jonathan Greenblatt, who attributes this rise to what he calls the "normalization of antisemitism" in an increasingly polarized environment.

Greenblatt points out that antisemitism emanates from diverse ideological corners, including the far right, the radical left, and religious extremism, seeping into mainstream discourse. Conspiracy theories, unfounded claims, and accusations against the Jewish community and the state of Israel have contributed to this unsettling trend, as misinformation spreads through various media platforms.

The ADL's focus also extends to addressing antisemitism on college campuses, which account for a significant portion of the incidents. More than 2,000 cases were reported on campuses last year. Greenblatt expresses support for the administration's efforts to tackle antisemitism on college campuses but emphasizes the importance of balancing this mission with constitutional rights like due process. He insists on addressing the issue in a manner that protects not only Jewish students but also respects broader civil liberties.

A new report on the steady rise of anti-Semitism in the U.S. has been released by the Anti-Defamation League. In 2024, the ADL says there were over 9,000 incidents of anti-Semitic assault, harassment, and vandalism in the U.S. That's an all-time high. Joining me now is Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and National Director of the Anti-Defamation League. Thank you so much for being here. Fourth year in a row, there have been increases? That's correct. What's... Why? You know, ADL's been tracking this information now for nearly 50 years, but something has changed in America. I would describe it as the normalization of anti-Semitism. I think an increasingly polarized environment, people are at odds with each other, looking for someone to blame when systems fail. The Jews play this role, unfortunately, of perennial scapegoats, who are seeing things play out all over society. What concerns you the most about that overheated temperature? Well, look, it's very bad. I mean, you have anti-Semitism coming from the far right, from the radical left, from religious zealots, and it drifts and it gets laundered in the mainstream, John. This is very worrying. When conspiracy theories are the coin of the realm, when people are going to podcasters or to social media to get their news, and facts don't seem to matter, fiction prevails, and this fiction that the Jews are to blame for whatever your particular circumstance is the oldest trick in the book. So is the chain of events here, what happens is this kind of the worst part of it then kind of gets slightly washed a little bit and then moves into this other ecosystem where it then becomes a part of a general discussion. Something like that. I mean, we have politicians, you know, making wild claims about certain funders or donors. We have extremists making crazy charges about the Jewish state. And all this starts to drift into what I would call the public conversation. Tell me about your thoughts about what the administration is trying to do on college campuses, which they say is an effort to get at anti-Semitism. Well, let's be clear. The issue on college campuses are rampant. Of the 9,400 or so incidents that we tracked last year, we saw well over 2,000 that took place on campuses. It is like nothing we've ever seen before. The civil rights of Jewish students have been trampled upon for more than 18 months since October the 7th. But I believe that we can protect Jewish student rights and still respect the Constitution. So I worry about things like due process. So I don't want to take my foot off the gas in terms of fighting anti-Semitism on the campus, but I want to do it in a way which ultimately protects everyone.
