A recent CBS News poll indicates that a significant majority of Americans, 70%, oppose military action in Venezuela. Additionally, 76% of respondents believe the Trump administration has not clearly explained its position on the issue, with many Americans not perceiving Venezuela as a major threat.

The poll also highlights ongoing concerns about the U.S. economy, as most Americans rate it poorly due to high and rising prices. Many respondents feel there is a disconnect between the administration's statements on inflation and their personal experiences.

New poll shows most Americans against military action in Venezuela

Now to some other big stories. The United States is escalating its pressure campaign against Venezuela. Trump administration officials have discussed the possibility of dropping leaflets in Caracas, the capital city. Sources tell CBS News this move would act as a kind of psychological warfare. Today, the U.S. is set to label Venezuela's Cartel de los Soles a foreign terrorist organization, and the FAA has also warned of a potentially hazardous situation over the country, prompting several international airlines to cancel flights leaving Venezuela on Saturday. And the latest CBS News polls show most Americans are against military action in Venezuela. You see it right here. 70% told us they would oppose it, and 76% say the Trump administration has not clearly explained its position on that just yet. CBS News Elections and Surveys Executive Director Anthony Salvato is here with us this Monday to talk about what's behind these numbers. Anthony, good morning to you. Good morning. What else does this polling data show us? Well, the first thing to do is, let's unpack what you just showed people. The explanation is connected to what you explained about the opposition, right? Which is people don't see a connection, and they tell us they don't see a threat, and therefore you're getting that opposition number. So walk through that, right? Has the administration clearly explained its position? This three quarters saying, no it has not. But then you look at it and you say, does it need to? Do people think it needs to? And yeah, and look at the, even the party breakdown here, right? See, even two thirds of Republicans say it needs to explain that, and then that in turn leads you to, do they see it as a major threat? No, by and large, they don't. So all of that is the opinion or people basically telling us they need to know more, and that's why you then get the opposition. They don't feel those dots have been connected. And this isn't the only topic you asked voters about. The economy typically drives people's voting opinions. What is the latest on that front? Indeed. So look, these are ratings of the U.S. economy. Rather consistently low throughout the year. But that's the story, which is to say that at the start of the year, when we polled people, they told us they expected the economy to get better, to be good this year. And so it's not right now in their estimation. Big reason for that, they still see prices as high, not going down, in fact, going up. Prices have been driving those ratings of the economy throughout this year, throughout for years actually. So that's the underpinnings of that. The other part is when you look at what they say they're hearing from the White House, they say the president is making things with inflation sound better than they're actually feeling in reality.
