New data from the Department of Home Affairs indicates that Australia now has more than four million firearms, surpassing the number present at the time of the Port Arthur massacre. New South Wales holds the highest number of guns, with over 1.1 million and approximately 260,000 firearms licenses issued in the state. 

A significant proportion of legally registered firearms and license holders are located in urban areas, with a third of guns and 40% of license holders based in cities. In response to a recent terror attack, New South Wales detectives are set to travel to the Philippines to investigate potential links between ISIS-affiliated groups and the alleged perpetrators.

Well as gun safety advocates say most Australians are blissfully unaware of just how many firearms are in the community and these figures well they might come as a shock. According to this data released by the Department of Home Affairs there are now more than four million firearms in Australia. That's a record number and more than at the time of the Port Arthur massacre. New South Wales has the most guns in the nation, more than 1.1 million. Across the state around 260,000 firearms licenses have been issued. That's more than Queensland and Victoria which has less than a million guns. A third of all the guns that are registered legally in this country are in cities. 40% of the individuals who have the licenses for those guns are in cities. Australians have been rightfully proud of our gun laws for the last 30 years but unfortunately blissfully unaware of the growth in the number of firearms, the types of firearms and the availability of firearms. As for the investigation into Bondi we do have an update from police. New South Wales detectives will be traveling to the Philippines soon to investigate if any ISIS-linked terrorists in the country helped the alleged Bondi shooters plan their massacre.
