The campaign features young engineers, such as satellite risk manager Cole Scott-Curwood, who are helping to broaden students’ understanding of the profession.

Research from Engineers Australia suggests that misconceptions about the nature of engineering may be discouraging young people from pursuing the field. Bernadette Foley, from the Professional Standards and Engineering Practice Group at Engineers Australia, highlighted that outdated perceptions remain prevalent. Foley emphasised the diverse and evolving opportunities within engineering, including roles related to infrastructure, manufacturing, smart technologies, and the transition to net zero emissions.

The campaign also seeks to address gender imbalance in the profession, with only 16% of professional engineers in Australia currently being women. By showcasing a variety of engineering roles and the importance of diverse perspectives, the initiative aims to attract more women and people from diverse backgrounds to the industry.

Engineers featured in the campaign have described the appeal of the profession as involving practical problem-solving and having a direct impact on society. Reza Tolentino, an engineer at Endeavour Energy, pointed to the rapidly changing world and the increasing complexity of challenges that require engineering solutions. The campaign underscores the central role engineers play in advancing technology and supporting community needs.

From the energy networks we rely on to the satellite dishes that beam our favourite shows onto our smart TVs and devices, behind the scenes making them all work are engineers right across the country. Everything that you see, touch, do, interact with is likely to be designed by an engineer in some way. Now a group of young Australian engineers like satellite risk manager Cole Scott-Curwood have joined the profession's peak body for a new campaign to get more students interested in becoming an engineer themselves. I think a lot of kids would think that engineering is about building things but engineering is a lot more than that. New research suggests a lack of understanding about the profession may be stopping young people from choosing a career in engineering. We found that there are still, and it's stubbornly still, outdated perceptions about what engineering is. All of the projects which are being committed to, whether they be infrastructure, manufacturing, smart technologies, transition to net zero, they all require engineers and they all require more engineers. My favourite thing about being a future good engineer is that every day looks a little bit different. Here at the headquarters of Endeavour Energy, Reza Tolentino is one of a number of engineers helping make our power grid more sustainable using renewable sources. The world is changing really quickly and problems are getting more complex over time. Being able to do something hands on and be very practical, I think that was probably the key attractor for me. Currently only 16% of professional engineers in Australia are women. This new campaign aims to change that and showcase the diversity of roles that engineering offers across a variety of industries. Engineering is about everybody. We need diverse perspectives, we need diverse cultures, we need diversity in all its shapes and sizes to be representative of the community that we serve. Back at Optus' operations centre in Sydney for Cole Scott-Kerwood, a career in engineering, much like the job of the satellite dishes he works with, comes down to one thing. At the end of the day it's all about keeping people connected. It's solving problems that are important to the nation, to the public, and doing things that are important for those around us.
