Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lost his parliamentary majority after the Shas party, a key coalition partner, announced its withdrawal from government. The decision was prompted by disagreements over a proposed law mandating military service for all, ending a longstanding exemption for ultra-Orthodox men.

Shas's departure follows the exit of United Torah Judaism, another ultra-Orthodox party, earlier in the week. Despite leaving the coalition, Shas leader Aryeh Derry indicated the party may still support Netanyahu's government on some legislation. The development comes as Israel's parliament approaches its summer recess and as ceasefire negotiations with Hamas continue.

The far-right ultra-Orthodox Shas party's surprise withdrawal leaves Netanyahu, whose domestic support has been waning, with a minority in parliament. Shas, who has long served as a kingmaker in Israeli politics, said it would be leave-in over disagreements surrounding a proposed law that would mandate military service for all. Shas men were granted exemptions from compulsory service via a decades-old arrangement by Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion. It's the second ultra-Orthodox party to quit government this week after United Torah Judaism announced it was leaving on Tuesday. Shas ministers are expected to resign from their positions on Thursday morning. The party's leader, Aryeh Derry, did however note that it would not undermine Netanyahu's coalition from the outside, and could still vote with it on some legislation. The announcement comes shortly before the Knesset goes into summer recess, set to begin on July 27.

Israel has faced international condemnation over its three days of airstrikes in Syria. The European Union and the United Nations have called for a return to calm, while Iran has urged countries in the region to respond against Israel.
