However, discussions were also influenced by ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with NATO's chief supporting recent US strikes in Iran, a stance not shared by all leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron.

Attention is also on the Indo-Pacific, with Australia's involvement seen as crucial to countering China's influence, despite not being a NATO member. The summit is expected to address calls for increased defence spending, with the US advocating for a rise from 2% to 5% of GDP for member nations. The tightly controlled meetings are also an opportunity for key discussions on the sidelines, as leaders seek to reinforce unity and the rules-based international order.

NATO summit may be "most significant since Cold War"

32 nations and some of the world's most powerful militaries, together for a security summit some are calling the most significant since the Cold War. And we meet at a truly historic moment. NATO's focus is Europe, the US and a boost to defence spending. But attention is elsewhere, with the Middle East overshadowing talks in the Netherlands with the chief of the military alliance backing US strikes in Iran. My biggest fear would be for Iran to own and be able to use and deploy a nuclear weapon. I would not agree that this is against international law what the US did. But cracks are emerging, French President Emmanuel Macron believes the attacks were not legal. We have several risks of escalation and uncontrolled escalation. With tensions easing in the Middle East, Volodymyr Zelensky wants to shift focus back to Ukraine. The President meeting with King Charles before heading to the NATO summit, which will impact our region. While Australia isn't a NATO member, our role in the military alliance is still seen as crucial to counter China's growing influence and rising threats in the Indo-Pacific. And even though Anthony Albanese isn't attending this summit, the Deputy Prime Minister is. What I think we all have in common is a maintenance of the rules-based order at a time when the rules-based order is under pressure. And leaders here want to show strength through unity. Well John-Paul Gonzo is live for us tonight at The Hague. JP, when does Donald Trump actually arrive? Well, Sandra, it's still a little while away yet. He's not expected to touch down for a few more hours later this evening at local time. Tomorrow he will meet with European allies. It's also expected he might meet with a wider group of Pacific leaders, including potentially the Deputy Prime Minister Richard Miles. That would be significant, of course, because Anthony Albanese didn't meet Donald Trump at that G7 summit not that long ago. Given things seem to be calming somewhat between Israel and Iran, the focus of this summit will shift back to the key order of business, which is defence spending. Donald Trump wants NATO members to increase that from 2% to 5%. That is a big ask, especially for some smaller European nations. But essentially, the US President has been very critical in the past of some European allies, saying they're not doing enough, they're not spending enough, and they need to take more responsibility for security in their own backyard and not rely on the United States. This summit is pretty quick. The meetings are tightly choreographed and heavily controlled. What is really interesting, though, is what happens behind the scenes. Those meetings on the sidelines is where things can really get interesting.
