The move comes as China advances its own lunar landing program, intensifying the competition to return humans to the moon.

SpaceX, which was selected four years ago to develop a lunar lander, has faced technical challenges including in-flight failures and the need to demonstrate in-space refueling. NASA has requested faster proposals from both SpaceX and Blue Origin, while Lockheed Martin is also preparing a bid. The agency is focused on ensuring the United States maintains its leadership in lunar exploration.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is NASA's acting administrator. This summer he told us if his concerns grew about SpaceX meeting NASA's schedule, he'd go public with them. I'm gonna open up the contract. I'm gonna let other space companies compete with SpaceX. Starship's development has been challenged by a series of in-flight failures and explosions. And SpaceX has yet to prove Starship can refuel in space, part of a complex architecture involving multiple launches. This is an architecture that no NASA administrator that I'm aware of would have selected had they had the choice. On Monday, NASA told SpaceX and Blue Origin it wants plans for faster approaches by next week. Blue Origin already has a contract to build a lander for a later Artemis mission. Aerospace giant Lockheed Martin is also working up a proposal. Whatever one can get us there first, to the moon, we're gonna take.
