Tesla is now testing out a ride-hailing service in the Bay Area, which is part of Elon Musk's plan to eventually become a robo-taxi service.

Tesla has launched a pilot ride-hailing service in the Bay Area, sending private invitations to select users to participate in early testing. The service covers San Francisco, the peninsula down to San Jose, and parts of the East Bay, including Berkeley, Fremont, and Hayward. 

Currently, the service operates similarly to traditional ride-share apps, with a driver present who can use Tesla's self-driving mode while remaining ready to take control. Regulatory requirements in California mandate a pilot phase without charging customers before the service can expand. Tesla does not yet have permission to operate fully driverless vehicles, and the rollout of a fully autonomous taxi service could take years.

We are in the middle of this new service map that Elon Musk released very early this morning, he says. This new ride hailing from Tesla is going to be available to all of us. It's going to be available to all of us. It's going to be available for all of San Francisco and the peninsula down to San Jose and parts of the East Bay, including Berkeley. Fremont and Hayward. Now, for now, it's expected to work a lot like an Uber. You call a driver. A driver comes and pick you up and takes you to wherever you need to go. That driver is allowed to use Tesla's self driving mode so long as they are sitting in the driver's seat and prepare to take over at any time. That's according to Elon Musk, and he's expecting to see this ride become a full run happening in places like Austin, Texas, where only a supervisor is required in those rides, and they can sit in the passenger seat instead of the driver's seat. As it stands, Tesla does not have the permission to operate as a fully driverless vehicle, just like you would see. With the way Mo car and it can take years before it gets to that point. So this new taxi service is a big deal. It's going to be a lot of fun. Tesla's private invitations are going out right now, so much like. When some of these new services debut. You need some sort of code that you put in, and then you get to test it out.
