California is facing potential mudslides after rain battered the state earlier in the week. CBS News' Andres Gutierrez reports, and meteorologist Tony Sadiku has the latest weather forecast.

California has experienced significant flooding and mudslides after a period of intense rainfall, particularly affecting areas like Wrightwood where 10 inches of rain fell on burn scar hillsides. Emergency services have conducted multiple rescues, including from rooftops, and at least three deaths have been reported since the storm began, including one in San Diego due to a falling tree.

The severe weather has also impacted travel, with snow snarling traffic on Interstate 80 and ski resorts receiving substantial snowfall. Flood watches remain in effect across much of California, while parts of the Northeast, including New York City, are preparing for a major snowstorm with up to 8 inches of accumulation expected.

Mudslides threaten California after massive rains

From the hills of Altadena to flooded freeways. California remains waterlogged. People drive around road closed signs and they think they can drive through the water and what happens. They end up getting stuck, flood out their engine and then we have to come save them. And it keeps on coming, creating Christmas happy. Part is hit the mountain community of Wrightwood. 10 inches of rain poured onto burn scar hillsides, sending water and mud straight into town. Eric Sherwin is with San Bernardino County Fire water rescues from vehicles traveling onto flooded roadways. We had people that were trapped in their houses. Wrightwood resident Tim Needham took this video of a dramatic rescue from a rooftop. We walked as far as we could without getting swept up in the water and saw that there were people that my neighbors that were on top of their roof. At least three people have been killed since the storm began, including a man in San Diego who was crushed by a falling tree. Into Sierra snow, snarl traffic on a major highway Interstate 80. But in California ski resorts, at least 3 feet of new snow was a welcome treat unless you were the one shoveling a flood watch warning remains in effect through Friday afternoon. For any post Christmas travel anywhere from the Great Lakes to the Northeast. Ice storm warnings just east of Pittsburgh will mean treacherous travel across portions of the I-80 Corridor and a winter storm warning for New York City could see its biggest snow in nearly four years. Look at this as it develops already a messy start to the morning in Michigan. This rolls through Buffalo to Pittsburgh. All this rolls through to Philly down to the South New York City. By this evening, get ready for moderate to heavy snow that can accumulate pretty quickly. Inch or two an hour snowfall rates will mean treacherous conditions on the road. Poor visibility, slick travel right through the overnight hours. This starts to let up a little bit after that, but this will be a lot to shovel, so pace yourself. We're thinking about 1.25 inch of ice or more, so definitely rough travel, but also will likely see power outages too in this zone. Meanwhile, 6 to 10 inches of snow can fall. New York City higher elevations. Expect travel delays and issues there. West Coast one more day of flood watches across much of California. Moderate to heavy rain could still mean some localized flooding in the higher terrain, but we are expecting improvements. The weather starts to clear up and dry out heading into the weekend. Meanwhile, big warmth across much of the middle of the country could challenge records Oklahoma City to Memphis. More warmth on tap Saturday.
