Kansas City Police are investigating two recent crimes at Ward Parkway Shopping Center: an attempted carjacking involving a 20-year-old woman and a separate robbery. The victim's mother described the incident as violent, with her daughter sustaining physical injuries and ongoing trauma. Police have identified subjects of interest but have not made any arrests in either case. 

Shopping center management stated that overall crime has decreased in the past year and highlighted new security measures, including cameras, curfew policies, and vehicle patrols. Despite concerns, customers continue to visit the center, while the victim's mother hopes her public statement will lead to accountability and change.

And KSHB 41 News reporter Fernanda Silva is amplifying the voice of a woman who went through a very scary situation. It was terrifying. No parent wants to get that phone call. Barwell found out through a phone call that her daughter was the victim of an attempted carjacking. They reached into the car and slapped her and grabbed her by the hair. She says her 20-year-old daughter was physically injured. Her knee is pretty bruised up and scraped up, scratched up. But her daughter Elizabeth is also dealing with the trauma. She says she keeps reliving it. She keeps replaying it all the time. The attempted carjacking happened on August 1st. According to KCPD, detectives working on the case have identified subjects of interest. It was violent. It was extreme. KCPD is also investigating a robbery that happened just a couple of days later on Wednesday. A female customer was confronted by a person who used physical force to steal items from her. No arrests have been made in either case. I need to know my daughter is safe. I'm not sure what they're still capable of. Other customers are also concerned. I could kind of see the motion of a lot of people coming through and doing a quick steal, smash and grab type situation. But that hasn't stopped them from shopping there. If you stay away from any place you're afraid of, then you give it up. In a statement, Ward Parkway Shopping Center management said crime of all types has decreased over the past year at the center. They also mentioned that they have been working with KCPD to improve security at the center, which includes the installation of new cameras, curfew policies and vehicle patrols.
