Police in New York have made more arrests amid protests at universities over the war in Gaza. College and city officials say many of those involved in campus protests at Columbia University and CCNY were not affiliated with the schools.

According to college and city officials, a significant number of individuals engaged in the protests at Columbia University and the City College of New York (CCNY) are not students or affiliated with the institutions. These developments mark an escalation in the ongoing campus protests related to the conflict.

In a separate incident, New York University (NYU) experienced a police raid aimed at clearing out protester encampments and individuals who refused to vacate the premises. The operation, requested by school officials, resulted in the deployment of Department of Sanitation trucks to remove clutter and debris, culminating in the arrest of more than a dozen individuals. Demonstrators who spoke to the media recounted quick police action to facilitate the raid, including the removal of barriers and the swift appearance of police forces to arrest those who had not left the scene.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has shared images on social media that display signs and paraphernalia found within university buildings which they claim promote civil unrest and anti-Israeli sentiments. Some messages on these materials included, “Disrupt, reclaim, destroy Zionist business everywhere,” “Death to Israel real estate,” and “Death to America on school.” This has raised concerns over the nature and tone of the protests.

Simultaneously, the New School also faced a police raid where, following a request from school officials, officers dispersed illegal encampments across the campus. This operation led to the arrest of 43 demonstrators. Supporters gathered in lower Manhattan to support and greet those who were released.

New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams commented on the arrests, highlighting the role of civil disobedience and the inevitability of arrests in such scenarios. Williams stressed the importance of understanding the rules broken by protesters and determining appropriate responses. The NYPD's Deputy Commissioner of Counterterrorism Intelligence has indicated an ongoing investigation to identify individuals potentially radicalizing the movement, with specific reference to leaflets and flyers instructing demonstrators on non-peaceful protest techniques.

The NYU raid happened just after 6 Friday morning. Police say school officials asked them to clear out encampments and protesters refusing to leave. Department of Sanitation trucks were brought in to remove the clutter and debris. More than a dozen were taken into custody. We spoke with one demonstrator shortly after police moved in. They had removed these barriers so that cops could come in easier. By the time a lot of us who did not want to get arrested had left, there was already full lines of cops in the back. Part of civil disobedience is breaking some rules and we have to figure out what rules are broken and what's the commensurate response. Part of civil disobedience at some point there will be arrests made. We definitely understand that. The leaflets, the flyers showing them how to demonstrate, showing them how not to be peaceful, showing them how to make human change. There's somebody that is radicalizing this movement and our Deputy Commissioner of Counterterrorism Intelligence will find out who it is.
