This weekend will be a scorcher across most of the country. Summer is here, and so is an extreme and expanding heat wave. Some 200 million Americans could face dangerous and life-threatening conditions. That danger stretching from Denver to Washington, DC. The heat and humidity expected to shatter temperature records. Tonight, severe weather in the plains blamed for three deaths in North Dakota. Air travel also affected. CBS's Ali Bauman at New Jersey's Newark Liberty Airport leads us off tonight. Ali, good evening. Good evening, Nancy. The start of summer has delivered a sudden shift in weather, which is having a ripple effect at airline hubs nationwide. And now millions of Americans are bracing for what's expected to be an extremely dangerous heat wave. Airline passengers today arrived at Newark's Liberty Airport in New Jersey with fingers crossed. It is what it is. You can't control it. So just go with it. In the last 24 hours, severe storms delayed or canceled thousands of flights nationwide. The air traffic control system already stressed from infrastructure and staffing issues. Overnight, tornadoes swept through North Dakota and Minnesota. Storms leveled about a dozen farms and homes, killing at least three people. It's a tragic event, because they are all close. We are a tight-knit community, and everybody knows everybody. The wind even pushed a train off its tracks. Storm damage extended east. This week, 15-year-old Yasin Khalifa survived a lightning strike in New York City's Central Park. He has no memory of the hit, only the moments after. I can see, but I can't talk. I can't move. So I'm just kind of locked in my body for a second until I get into the ambulance. And I feel everyone trying to shake me. The dangerous weather is now bringing extreme heat for tens of millions from the Midwest to the East Coast. I hope my AC stays intact. It's one of the most expansive heat alerts ever. Big cities like New York will bear the brunt. This is not your run-of-the-mill hot summer week. This is so unusual for all of us. And experts warn this spike in heat is dangerous, because our bodies are not yet acclimated. Nancy, the number one cause of weather-related deaths in the US is extreme heat.
