A new crew aboard the International Space Station is currently waiting for 40 very special space mice. They will be part of a payload with several other experiments to be tested aboard the ISS.

These mice are not ordinary rodents but special subjects intended for a study on macular degeneration. They are included in a payload that carries several experiments designated for onboard testing at the ISS. This initiative marks a significant step in understanding and potentially finding solutions for macular degeneration through experiments conducted in a microgravity environment.



Mice going to space for macular degeneration study

So a couple bright lights for us. Let's see. Macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness for adults over 50. Let's take a look. Wasilewski has an advanced stage in both eyes. He gets regular eye injections to slow down the inevitable. The cornea looks healthy. My sister, as I said back east, she's declared legally blind from macular degeneration. So there's a huge impact on quality of life for patients suffering from macular degeneration in the intermediate stage and advanced stages. This takes away people's ability to read their own medications, do their own finances, and their independence. In the left eye you have the wet macular, that's that scar tissue, and the treatments for advanced geographic atrophy work best to slow actively growing areas. Retinal specialist Dr. Hima Ramkumar has been researching the disease for 17 years. With macular degeneration, deposits collect in cells in the center of the eye called the macula breakdown. And the retina, which tells the brain what you see, doesn't work right. Dr. Ramkumar is developing a gene therapy to teach certain eye cells to self-heal. For the intermediate stage, which is what we're targeting, the patients that have full independence and are looking at their future and don't want it to get worse, that's what our therapy is geared at. Another 40 will stay on land as ground control for 30 days. Animals are used in research for understanding disease, and microgravity is key. We've seen their hair like this in interviews. That is also happening to the fluids inside their bodies. This affects the eyes and the pressure within the eyes, and it can cause damage that mimics macular degeneration and other diseases on Earth. In space, a similar syndrome can happen in astronauts after six months. It takes a lot longer to get to Mars, so someday we'll be on a rocket for much longer. Retinal scans of the mice will help inform clinical trials and one day help patients like Larry Wasilewski. Looking at something like reversal, like prevention, that is massive for the tens of millions that may be impacted by this. Do you think you can do it? I think we have a good chance, and if not, it was definitely worth trying and we'll learn more, iterate, and patients need better options. But that is my driving factor. Other researchers are also working on gene therapies for advanced macular degeneration, but this would be the first for patients less severe. If it works. After the mice would come human trials sometime next year.
