Hurricane Melissa is approaching Jamaica, with authorities urging residents to evacuate while conditions still allow. The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 175 miles per hour, is expected to bring dangerous weather across the entire island, including severe winds, heavy rainfall, and a storm surge of up to 15 feet. 

Melissa ranks among the four strongest October hurricanes in the Atlantic's satellite era and is the strongest storm recorded this late in the season in the modern era. Western Jamaica is forecast to experience the most intense winds, while Kingston may see gusts between 100 and 120 miles per hour. The storm's slow movement is expected to prolong hazardous conditions, and it has been rated a 5 on the AccuWeather Real Impact Scale.

The key point we're making to all Jamaicans is that they need to move now when they can. When the hurricane gets closer to Jamaica, which it will overnight, we will not be able to help and do the evacuation. So we have our buses going into the areas to take them out and the shelters are ready. The full force of Melissa is expected to reach Jamaica Tuesday morning and into the middle of the day with conditions deteriorating well before landfall. We can take you now live to Jamaica. This is Kingston right now. Now Kingston is going to be well east of the point of possible landfall, but we are really concerned about this whole area. You know, Jamaica is not a huge land mass or the entire island. The entire island nation is going to be subject to some really awful conditions here. And as we look at the latest here, max sustained winds 175 miles per hour. So it's a hundred miles per hour beyond the threshold for a category one hurricane. And it's moving officially northwest at three miles per hour. But if you look closely, you can see a little bit of movement and a recent, a couple of the recent frames have even shown a little bit more movement to the south and then kind of a pause, a little wobble there. And again, it's still a very intact eye and eye wall at this point. So there's just some very fickle, weak steering flow. We do expect it right now is actually, it's a small touch due west of the longitude of the western tip of Jamaica. We do expect it to curve north and more sharply and more abruptly, and it may even hook back into Jamaica, probably hooking into Jamaica as opposed to passing to the west. We are forecasting a landfall, but it's going to be way well west of Kingston proper. This is one of the four strongest October hurricanes on record in the Atlantic in the satellite era. And by lowest pressure, it is the fifth strongest for any month in the Caribbean, inside the Caribbean, in at least the satellite era as well. It's also become the strongest storm this late in the season in the modern era as well. There have been no stronger storms from October 27th through the end of the hurricane season. So here we are again, the updated spot a little west of where we had it a little later, four hours later, 1 p.m. Tuesday. So we expect this to make a sweeping curve back into Jamaica and through parts of Cuba. So very, very dangerous storm. The specific semantics there of exactly where landfall may occur, again, is just one part of the conversation. Western Jamaica will be subject to some of the strongest winds of 140-plus miles per hour. Kingston likely to see gusts of 100 to 120 miles per hour. Very slow-moving storm that prolongs the period of time with those onshore winds. A storm surge of 10 to 15 feet on the south side of Jamaica. And this storm has an AccuWeather Real Impact Scale rating of 5 because of the inundation of rain, fierce wind, and that storm surge.
