Tens of thousands have already abandoned their homes. Kurgan Governor Vadim Shumkov said there was almost a “sea” of water approaching the area and fresh rainfall was making the situation worse.

The situation has already forced tens of thousands to leave their homes. Kurgan Governor Vadim Shumkov described the floodwaters as resembling a "sea," indicating the vast extent of the inundation. The ongoing crisis has been exacerbated by recent rainfall, further worsening conditions for affected areas.

Nature is taking its toll, flooding more and more land in Russia's southern Urals and northern Kazakhstan. The house is filled with water, over a meter deep. All our belongings are here, we left everything behind. Spring floods are nothing new in this part of the world, but this year the scale of the disaster is unprecedented. I've lived over 40 years in this settlement, it's the first time I see such a massive flood. The house, the barn, all the appliances and clothes, everything went underwater. You can see the unusable refrigerator, washing machine and heater lying there. In the north of Kazakhstan, the water level in the Ishin river reached a record 9 meters. The water burst over the dam in the city of Petropavlovsk and rushed into its streets. People began evacuating. Emergency services have been deployed to help. Almost 9.5 million cubic meters of water have been pumped out, but thousands of houses remain flooded. The cause of the floods has been the abnormal weather in Kazakhstan and Russia's southern Urals. Last autumn, heavy rains increased the water level in the Ural, Ishim and Tabor rivers, and the soil became totally saturated. Then severe frosts hit, and later during the winter a massive snow cap was formed. So at the beginning of the spring, the frozen ground wasn't able to absorb the melting snow, and the waters rushed straight into the rivers. The situation in Kazakhstan has been complicated by ice flows drifting with the current. They demolished power lines, leaving parts of the city of Petropavlovsk without electricity and drinking water. Now traffic to Kazakhstan from Russia's Tyumen, Kurgan and Chelyabinsk regions is partially blocked. Only trucks are allowed through. Cars have to turn around. The peak of the disaster is yet to come.
