Arthur Peter Mutharika has been declared president-elect of Malawi after winning 56 percent of the vote in the recent general election. His victory marks a return to office, having previously served as president from 2014 to 2020. 

Supporters celebrated in the streets, expressing hope that Mutharika's leadership will address ongoing economic difficulties, including high inflation, food and fuel shortages, and the effects of recent natural disasters. Incumbent president Lazarus Chakwera conceded defeat after receiving 33 percent of the vote.

Voters are reeling from soaring living costs, fuel and food shortages, and inflation topping 27 percent, all worsened by a cyclone in 2023 and last year's crippling drought. The president should make sure that we have food and reduce the price of fertilizer. He should also work at restoring the value of the Malawi kwacha. He should make sure that there are no devaluation of the currency. He should also avoid regionalism to build the nation. Mutareka's win boots incumbent Lazarus Shakira out. He considered defeat in a speech on national television just hours before the final results were announced. Shakira came second, with just 33 percent of the vote.
