It's hot, it's dry, and anxiety is smouldering in much of British Columbia. Crews are fighting new fires, almost two dozen of them, most sparked by lightning. Helicopters showed up and then like bombers and you could see trees exploding. It was it was like I've never been in an actual forest fire like that. It was it was super intense. What Paul Wiebe saw from the beach was an all-out effort to save homes in Peachland. Two main highways briefly closed, people from 400 properties forced to flee. Many are now allowed back, but it's stressful. I have nothing, I have absolutely nothing, right, no clothes, no toothbrush, no nothing. Scenes like this are especially troubling for people living near Lytton. The village was destroyed by fire four years ago. Now newly rebuilt homes are socked in by smoke and it's scary. And it's the color of that smoke, it's that angry kind of orangey color. The fire is 10 kilometers away from the village, so not an immediate threat. There's more concern for two sparsely populated First Nation reserves nearby. Evacuation orders are in effect there. We watch it more on an hour-to-hour basis, sometimes minute-to-minute changes depending on the wind conditions. There's more lightning in the forecast. Fire officials say it's not whether there will be new fires, but where and how fast crews can put them out. Fires are growing really quickly upon ignition, which is kind of the main challenge that we do experience when things get unseasonably dry and very, very hot.
