Sydney's Luna Park has turned 90-years-old. The Harbour City turned on a sparkling day as the amusement park invited 90 very special guests to help celebrate.

Luna Park in Sydney commemorated its 90th anniversary with a special celebration, inviting 90 individuals aged 90 to join the festivities. Attendees enjoyed classic attractions like the ferris wheel and participated in a cake-cutting ceremony. 

The amusement park, which has operated since 1935, has faced significant challenges over the decades, including a tragic fire in 1979 and a temporary closure in 1996. Despite these setbacks, Luna Park remains a popular destination, drawing more than a million visitors annually and balancing its historical legacy with modern appeal.

Happy birthday Lunar Park! There was a big birthday celebration at Sydney's Lunar Park today as the world famous amusement park turned the big 9-0. We're so thrilled that it's here, we're so thrilled that we're having our 90th today. To mark 90 years, 90 lucky 90 year olds were invited along to join in on the fun. It's wonderful, absolutely the best idea they've ever had. Something you've got to do before you die, you've got to go to Lunar Park. All taking their turn on the ferris wheel. Oh it's been lovely on the ferris wheel and looking at all of Sydney, it's very good. My daughter put me in for it and I said, oh I don't like the ferris wheel, I didn't like it when I was 13. She said, well you're going on it, so I went on it and I loved it. It's not a birthday without cake, so Lunar Park's biggest fan was also invited along to do the honours. I was thrilled, I love cake, I mean who doesn't? The amusement park has been operating since 1935, now bringing in more than a million visitors annually. For us it's all about how do you be relevant, how do you be good custodians for this incredible asset and really how do you push it towards the future while balancing that really important heritage aspect of the park. Lunar Park was forced to close down temporarily in 1979 after seven people lost their lives in a fatal ghost train fire and shut down again in 1996 over financial difficulties from noise complaints, but it's a Sydney landmark that's endured. Over the last 90 years, Lunar Park has been through a lot of ups and downs, both literally and physically. Despite the ups and downs, Lunar Park continues to offer a thrill for all those who visit. And what the next 90 years may look like? Really trying to balance off between being important to the older generation who remember it from the 30s, 40s and 50s, but then also for young digital natives, how do you do things for them that really is about getting them off the screen and into the park, into this really vibrant atmosphere.
