Meteorologist Tony Laubach described the 2025 storm chase season as one of the most prolific of his 29-year career, logging over 30,000 miles and observing 36 tornadoes across 11 days. The most active period occurred between May 14 and 18, with 13 tornadoes witnessed in five days, including major outbreaks in Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas.

The season also featured significant hail events in Colorado and continued storm activity into early summer before quieting down in the latter half of the year. Laubach noted the absence of hurricanes or winter weather pursuits during this period, marking a sharp contrast to the season's earlier intensity.

Looking back on the 2025 storm chase season

2025 was a storm chase season to remember. Again this is a full condensed tornado you were seeing this live here on the active weather network. This thing is huge. Over the spring I logged more than 30,000 miles across 60 chase ventures tracking storms across the midwest the high plains and the southeast. In that time I saw 36 tornadoes on 11 different days making it one of my most prolific tornado seasons. The most active stretch came between May 14th and 18th when I observed 13 tornadoes in just five days from photogenic landspouts in southwest Nebraska to destructive tornadoes in Missouri into one of the largest tornado outbreaks in Kansas in the past five years. It was a fast-paced high-stakes week at the peak of the season and even June got into the action with some west Texas tornadoes including what was my tornado of the year here near Morton. But not every chase was about tornadoes. Colorado had its share of storms reminding us why it's the hail capital of the country. Three inch hailstones on I-70 seeing some of my biggest hail there and photogenic storms danced across the skies well into the summer but that's when things quieted down and with no hurricanes or winter weather to pursue in the time since the back half of the year has stayed quiet for me offsetting one of the most intense seasons of my 29-year career. Tornadoes just crossed the road there are numerous flipped vehicles and now we turn the page to 2026 and I see what awaits me in year 30. For AccuWeather, I'm meteorologist Tony Laubach.
