The longstanding alliance between the United States and Europe, forged after World War II, has faced new challenges during President Trump's tenure. Trump's critical remarks about the European Union and NATO have unsettled many Europeans, prompting leaders and citizens to question the future of transatlantic relations.

Despite the rhetoric, European nations are increasing their defense spending in response to security concerns, particularly regarding Russia. European officials express a continued commitment to the alliance, hoping for improved diplomatic relations and a return to stronger ties with the US.

Look ahead to 2026: Europe as a frenemy to Trump

I'm Elizabeth Palmer in London. American troops helped liberate Europe in 1944. Kids from Main Street America parading down the Main Street of France. And that victory in World War II forged one of the greatest alliances in modern history. Over the next seven decades, the relationship remained rock solid. He met with General de Gaulle in Paris. Your Majesty. Until... Thank you so much for having me. President Trump. Let's be honest, the European Union was formed in order to screw the United States. That's the purpose of it. And they've done a good job of it, but now I'm president. You know, you think of European Union, very friendly, they rip us off. It's so sad to see. Most European nations, they're decaying. We spoke with European security expert Camille Grand about how at least some of Trump's criticism is for American consumption. But still, how's that going down? Well, for the Europeans, it's quite shocking because there was a habit of being part of the same family. In April, we traveled to Paris to take the pulse. If I asked you one word to describe the Trump presidency at 100 days? I think it would be a bit scary, to be honest. Terrifying. I would say disaster. Germany's Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, put it this way. The decades of Pax Americana are largely over, he said. And no amount of nostalgia will bring them back. Pax Americana. An era of stability and peace led by the U.S. and its massive commitment to NATO. On NATO, Europeans do recognize that Trump is right. They have to spend more on defense, especially with a belligerent Russia on the doorstep. And they're doing it. Heading for 5% of GDP, which is a bigger proportion even than the United States. But will that be enough? They're hoping the president's bark will prove worse than his bite. In spite of the rhetoric and some of the policy and the threats, does Europe remain committed to the alliance if it can be preserved? I think there is no doubt about that. If you ask Europeans, they would much rather, all of them prefer to have a strong transatlantic bond. They have a sense of a shared interest with the U.S. And they very much prefer to be in an environment where they are when we are allies. Going into this new year, Europe will be keeping a close eye on the White House for signs that President Trump might offer them a diplomatic upgrade. From frenemy back to friend.
