While government supporters claim progress has been made in tackling corruption and attracting investment, critics argue that economic hardship is worsening and that Liberia’s natural resources are not benefiting the population. The country, still recovering from past civil wars and the Ebola crisis, continues to face significant challenges with poverty and development.

Under pounding rain, the streets of Monrovia echo with chants of anger and frustration. Protesters march towards Capitol Hill, denouncing what they see as a betrayal by President Joseph Bouaké's administration. I'm in the street to remind my government of their past promises that they made to us, the Liberian people, that they're going to better our lives. How can you say you came to better the lives of the people, but then you came and you took people from jobs? The right thing is to serve the people, because when you say your government is coming to rescue, you're saying that these men were doing such things, meaning corruption, right? And you're coming to clean this, you're coming to do the good thing. And now you come in and you take everything. Many say the promises made during the 2023 election campaign remain unfulfilled. With inflation soaring and public sector salaries stagnant, people say their patience is wearing thin. Bouaké, who took office in early 2024, pledged sweeping reforms. Supporters say the government has tackled corruption and made the country more attractive to investors. But critics say his government is failing the people. We expect that Joseph Bouaké, as president of Liberia, will meet the demands of the protesters and listen to the cries of his own people. Our suffering did it. People are going to be hungry at night. We have not been able to afford food on a daily basis. Suffering is escalating out of control. Liberia, recovering from two brutal civil wars and the 2014 Ebola crisis, remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Many believe the nation's abundant natural resources should be lifting people out of poverty, not leaving them behind. We haven't been fortunate to have had leaders who prioritize Liberia development priorities in a way. We have a small country, small population, abundant resources, abundant enough to make Liberia self-sufficient and to have some of the highest GDP in Africa. As tensions rise and public discontent grows louder, the pressure is on for Liberia's leaders to deliver on their promises. Vincent Monaghan, Al Jazeera.
