Rita Ebel, often referred to as the 'Lego-Granny', has been advocating for accessibility by building ramps out of donated LEGO bricks. Since 2019, Ebel and her team have constructed and donated more than 140 ramps, which are now found in Germany and several other European countries including France, Italy, Austria, and Spain.

The ramps are designed to assist wheelchair users, as well as those using walkers or strollers, making public spaces more inclusive. Ebel's building instructions have been shared internationally, further extending the reach of her initiative. She remains committed to the project as long as she is able.

'Lego-Granny' champions accessibility

She promotes accessibility through toy bricks. Rita Ebel and her team have been building ramps out of donated LEGO bricks since 2019, turning a toy into a tool for inclusion for wheelchair users, people using wheeled walkers or strollers. There are no exact numbers, but an estimated 1.5 million people in Germany use a wheelchair. Rita and her team have built and donated more than 140 ramps so far. You can find them all across Germany and also in France, Italy, Austria and Spain. The building instructions have been shared internationally. As long as I'm healthy, I'm going to be associated with LEGO ramps for a while.
