Lawmakers from both parties are pressing for the public release of a video showing a second strike on an alleged drug boat in the Caribbean, which was discussed in a closed-door briefing with top congressional leaders. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has stated that the Pentagon is still reviewing the footage, citing concerns about operational security, but some members of Congress and former federal ethics officials are pushing for greater transparency.

The video, which documents the first strike of Operation Southern Spear in September and is between 40 and 60 minutes long, has reportedly shocked some Intelligence Committee members who have seen it. The operation has incurred significant costs, with lawmakers noting that deploying major naval and air assets to the Caribbean could affect U.S. military readiness in other regions.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling for the release of a video showing the second strike on an alleged drug boat in the Caribbean during a closed door briefing with top congressional leaders known as the Gang of Eight. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon was still reviewing the footage. Still, lawmakers say that that footage needs to be made public. Video we gotta release the video. We gotta get any videos that do not in any way compromise mission integrity down there. Just get the stuff out there. Sure, sec the videos themselves need to be seen. I believe by the American public. But at the very least, by all members of Congress. Now a bipartisan group of former federal ethics officials is asking for an internal Justice Department investigation into the legal opinion, justifying those boat strikes. Let's bring in CBS News senior national security correspondent Charlie Daggett to talk more about this. So so Charlie, what do we learn from this briefing yesterday? And what are they still reviewing? This happened back in September. Yeah, Vlad, so you heard the comments, mostly by Democrats saying that it's just not good enough. At the very least, this video of that second boat strike, which was the first strike, by the way, in this whole Operation Southern Spear way back September 2nd. As you said months ago that they want to see this released, if not to the public, then to the Congress, the full Congress anyway. So there have been some members of Congress, some in the Intelligence Committee who have seen that and were shocked by what they saw too. And I have to tell you this. This video is between 40 and 60 minutes. If you count the first strike going back to the next three that followed. So there's a lot there. So Defense Secretary Hegseth said we have to review it. The reason he needs to review it, he says, is because that video, if you were just to release it whole, it contains information in there that could compromise operational security and the intelligence network. So having said that, we've seen the boat strikes. You and I have seen all of these strikes and you can see where some of the data or data on those videos have been detected. Direction, etc. So it can be done, but Secretary Hegseth has been dragging his heels about it. Now there might be one catalyst because the House has to approve a defense budget and inside that budget there's a caveat. So it's kind of hidden inside that said we're going to cut back your travel budget by at least a quarter unless that video is released. So that may serve as a catalyst, but at the moment we're all in a wait and see. And you reported on how much this operation, Operation Southern Spear, is costing US taxpayers. So break down the cost for us. And I mean, drugs flow into this country. It's a big, big problem and any attempt to address it should be applauded. But are they even stemming the amount of illegal narcotics that come into the United States by undertaking this mission vis-a-vis the costs? Well, first let me run down the cost and I had to bring this down outside with me because it's a lot. First of all, you've got the Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, right? So that's $10 million a week. Five more destroyers, that's $100 million. Two, sorry, the Iwo Jima amphibious and two docking ships, $88 million. This is in the three months of deployment. Two more cruisers, $45 million. $263 million just in the ships alone. Now let's get to the aircraft. The F-35 fighter jets, which we've seen, we reported on in Puerto Rico, $42,000 per flight hour. The B-52s that have been scrambling back and forth, $88,000. And the B-1s, a whopping $173,000 per flight hour. Now it will be argued that those ships, whether they're deployed anywhere, would cost that money. That's the running costs of ships, so that's a below line cost, if you will. The aircraft are a different story. The argument there would be, well, this is good training to have those things in the air and to do those flight hours, but it is hugely expensive. And what you have to keep in mind is the way the whole military runs, particularly the Navy, that they may budget all of that in, but those ships are normally deployed to places like the Middle East, like CENTCOM or INDOPACOM, the Indo-Pacific, where they're needed as a deterrent and to project US force. So what you have to keep in mind is when all these ships come in, including the Ford, they're going to slow down the rotation for other deployments around the world.
