Technology leaders are gathering in Las Vegas for CES, one of the industry's biggest conferences of the year. CNET editor at large Bridget Carey joins CBS News with a firsthand look at the new gadgets on display.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas featured the debut of advanced robotics and AI-powered devices, including a laundry-folding robot from LG and a new AI pet health monitor. Experts noted that while some devices, such as the laundry-folding robot, are still developing in terms of speed and practicality, they represent significant progress toward automated household assistance.

Additionally, an AI-powered device was introduced to monitor pet health by analyzing facial features and eating habits, providing reports to owners. These innovations, though currently expensive and requiring subscription services, are expected to become more accessible and integrated into daily life in the coming years.

Laundry-folding robot debuts at CES 2026

Well, the enthusiasm around AI comes as industry leaders gather at one of the biggest tech conferences of the year, the Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, in Vegas. On the first full day of the event, everything from AI pets to laundry-folding robots hit the show floor. Let's bring in live from Las Vegas is Bridget Carey, editor-at-large for CNET. Bridget, thanks so much for being with us. You were able to walk around yesterday, got a firsthand look at a lot of these new gadgets. Can robots, though, can they really do our chores? That's the ultimate question. Can we finally have Rosie the robot? I think we're getting closer in some degree. Okay, one that impressed me was a typical rolling vacuum on the floor, but they now have legs. They can climb the stairs. So we're getting closer, and that's actually coming out. But when we see things like LG having this humanoid robot, the one that can fold laundry, I look at that and I go, okay, that's great at a tech show. It's going a little slow for my needs. I think we have to have a little patience, but I like to see that we're getting closer at making this a reality for folks who need a little assistance at home. So even if it's slow, it's getting there. Oh, totally. I'm just thinking of this gigantic pile of laundry I have right now next to my bed, and while I'm at work, my robot could be folding it for me. This could work out. I'm okay with this. Okay, there's also a new AI-powered device that can monitor the health of our furry friends. This is really important because our little animals, our cats and dogs, they can't tell us if they're not feeling okay. How does this thing work? I know. I'm a new pet owner myself. So, yes, we're seeing AI smarts be putting cameras, and they're looking at your pet while they're approaching the little food and water station to see if there are deviations in their normal face. Are their ears a little wonky? Are the whiskers a little not normal? Eyes funny? And they're going to give a report to you by looking at, is something not normal? Also, temperature sensors as they approach are in this feeder that you're seeing here, and it's measuring how much food they're eating every day. And that's me trying to demo it with a stuffed cat because I didn't have a real cat. How much water? How much food? Because it is hard to keep track of, are they eating normal or not? And this is at least giving us a little more insight. These things will cost money, though. You're looking at a subscription service for something like this if you want all the data. So I think as consumers, we're kind of walking that fine line of, like, how much data can we get that's really useful to our actual lives and how much are we willing to pay for it? Yeah, it's interesting to see which of these devices are actually where they're going to be in 5 to 10 years because, as you say, they're really expensive now, but maybe down the line, maybe they won't be as expensive. They'll be more accessible to all of us. We'll see which ones rise to the top. Oh, it's always like that at CES. Yes, it's always like that.
