There was nothing in Benjamin Netanyahu's comments Wednesday that suggested Israel's position has shifted as he insisted Hamas can be defeated and the hostages free. His foreign minister, though, sounded more encouraging. We are serious in our will to reach a hostage deal and a ceasefire. I had no idea what they cooked up. This former Canadian ambassador to Israel says Netanyahu has resisted ending the war because his governing coalition could collapse. 60-day ceasefire is where they were at last time when Bibi broke the ceasefire and it broke because he wasn't prepared to negotiate the next phase which was withdrawal of Israeli troops and more hostages come out. A statement from Hamas said the militant group is studying a proposal it received from mediators. Meanwhile, Israeli attacks on what it claims are military targets in Gaza continue to exact a horrendous toll on civilians including a prominent hospital director Marwan al-Sultan. His nephew said al-Sultan and other members of his family were wiped out by an Israeli strike on his apartment.
