A shooting at Kentucky State University left one person dead and another injured as students were preparing for finals and the holiday break. Campus police quickly apprehended the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Jacob Lee Bard from Evansville, Indiana, who is now facing charges of murder and first-degree assault and is being held without bond.

The incident prompted a campus lockdown and raised concerns among students, especially as it marks the second shooting near the same residence hall in recent months. The university has stated it will not release further information about the victims at this time, and authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.

Latest details on deadly shooting at Kentucky State University

We are still following that horrible shooting at Kentucky State University just last night. CBS News correspondent Tom Hanson has the latest right now from our newsroom. Tom, what can you tell us this morning? Yeah, well, I want to set the scene for what unfolded yesterday. Picture this students taking their finals, really preparing to go home for the holiday break when this tragedy unfolded. Now, when police got on scene, campus police had already apprehended the suspect. That is 48 year old Jacob Lee Bard. He is from Evansville, Indiana, and I actually have his records pulled up here from the Franklin County Regional Jail. So I want to show you guys exactly what he was brought in with. You can see on this screen one charge of murder. That is because one of the victims succumbed to their wounds and then assault in the first degree. Presumably that is for the second victim in this shooting. Now, Bard Bard is being held overnight or he was held overnight in jail without bond. He is being held without bond, as you see from the screen right here. And just to give you a little bit of context here, Kentucky State University is an HBC you roughly 2200 kids, so not a huge institution here, but something that completely terrorized the campus, which was put on lockdown in the events that unfolded after this tragedy. I want to take a listen to what some of the students had to say. I don't think it should be a open campus anymore, you know, because this has been my first semester has been the second shooting has happened. Second shooting that's been right outside here. Uh, you know, doesn't really make me feel real safe living in young, but no, it's kind of a surreal experience. As that student mentioned there, this is the second shooting that has happened near that particular residence hall. The other one was in August. It was a drive by shooter injuring two people. I also want to pull up a statement that we have from the university itself, um, where they say out of respect for both students and their families, the university will not release identifying or additional medical information at this time. So really, just a fluid situation, and we are still piecing together exactly what compelled this 48 year old suspect to come onto campus and carry out this atrocious act.
