A high-impact storm system is forecast to move across the United States late in the week, bringing widespread showers and thunderstorms to the South and shifting weather patterns compared to recent weeks. The system will lift northeast into the Great Lakes, resulting in a warmer and wetter Saturday in the Northeast before colder air and snow showers arrive Sunday, especially in the Great Lakes region.

The weather is expected to influence NFL Wild Card Weekend games, with significant impacts anticipated at Soldier Field in Chicago, where snow showers, flurries, and temperatures dropping into the teens are forecast. Other matchups, such as in Charlotte and Jacksonville, will experience warmer or drier conditions as the weekend progresses.

Late-week storm to impact Wild Card Weekend

We're dealing with some widespread showers and thunderstorms in the South late this week. This is going to be a high impact storm system and a very different storm system compared to what we've been experiencing in recent weeks. Really, the past month, most storms have been kind of rounding the base of a deep trough, and we've been dealing with snow in the Mid Atlantic, the Ohio Valley, the Northeast. This is a different one. This system is reaching its southernmost point latitude out in the Western US and rising, pulling Northeast, lifting up into the Great Lakes, and that opens the door for warmth. In the Northeast, warmer and wetter Saturday, and then we'll begin to turn colder on Sunday in the Northeast. And behind this system there will be a period of time. Short one with blustery, colder winds and a burst of snow Sunday for the Great Lakes region. And we're going to turn cooler and drier across the South after some record warmth in many areas. So the weekend it's at a glance here. The previous graphic was the late work week. Here we are into the weekend. We got rain storms. Most of this is kind of. Heavily weighted on the Saturday timeframe. Sunday, this exits and colder air begins to march in. What does this do in the world of football? Here we have NFL playoffs underway, wildcard weekend and perhaps the greatest impact among the games from a weather standpoint may be at Soldier Field in Chicago. We got snow showers and flurries around temperatures turning pretty nippy here will have winds from the West, West, Northwest and around West Southwest. At times even at 15 miles per hour.
