International mediation, led by the United States, appears to have facilitated a compromise, with the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces agreeing to evacuate the area. President al-Sharar called on the Kurdish population to participate in building a unified Syria, offering hope for progress in a country affected by civil war since 2011.

The announcement comes as violent clashes between the government and Kurdish forces have been taking place in north-western Syria for several days. Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, President al-Sharar has been attempting to reunify the country. However, he's been met with mistrust from the Kurds, who are reluctant to place themselves under the authority of a government led by Islamists. After weeks of deadlocked negotiations, the Syrian army ordered civilians to evacuate several Kurdish-controlled areas before opening fire. Since Thursday, thousands of them have been fleeing the region, some crossing a rickety bridge over a branch of the Euphrates River. We're afraid of the strikes, that the conflict will start and become violent. We've left everything behind. We want peace and we hope that our two governments can reach an agreement without spilling the blood of the people. But international mediation led by the United States seems to have resulted in a compromise. Shortly after al-Sharar's announcement, the predominantly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces confirmed they'd evacuate the area Saturday morning. In his speech, the President addressed them directly. I invite you to actively participate in building this homeland, preserving its security and unity and rejecting any alternative. A sign of hope in a country which has been ravaged by civil war since 2011.
