A decade ago an out-of-court settlement provided some survivors modest payments. But the palace indicated there was more to say. And Charles would address that painful legacy on this trip. He did so at a state banquet. The wrongdoings of the past are a cause of the greatest sorrow and the deepest regret. There were abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence committed against Kenyans. But regret without an apology fell very short of what many demanded. An apology is more important than regret because when you apologize you actually acknowledge that these violations actually occurred. That kind of helps bring closure for victims. As prince, Charles faced similar criticism in Canada. Acknowledging the harm caused by residential schools but not saying sorry on behalf of the crown. This professor says money is more important than an apology. I'm not sure what an apology could mean. If it doesn't come with reparations, if it doesn't come with repair then it's just empty words. But this visit is also about looking forward. As several commonwealth countries are considering removing Charles as their head of state.
