Thousands of Kenyans and dignitaries from across Africa attended the funeral of Kenyan opposition leader and former parliamentarian Raila Odinga.

Mourners assembled at Jaramogi Odinga University of Science and Technology to bid farewell to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Family members, church leaders, and political figures delivered tributes, highlighting Odinga's lifelong commitment to fighting corruption, gender-based violence, and inequality. 

Odinga was remembered for his efforts to advance democracy and improve the lives of ordinary Kenyans, both in government and as an activist. His death has prompted widespread grief, with many noting the significant impact he had on Kenyan politics and society, as well as the challenge of filling the void left by his passing.

Kenyans bid farewell to Raila Odinga

Let's go straight to DW correspondent Felix Maringa in Western Kenya. Felix, you've been following the mourning ceremonies for the death of Odinga for days now. Where are you now? What is happening right there? We are at the Jaramogi Odinga University of Science and Technology. These are the grounds where the burial ceremony is taking place. Just behind me there is the casket with the remains of the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Various speakers are on stage. Right now it's a family that's giving tributes and members of the family, member after member, they've spoken very highly of Raila Odinga. Raila Odinga's daughter saying that the king is dead but the crown forever remains. Some of the other speakers, the church leaders who have spoken about him, have spoken very highly of him. They've spoken about some of the vices in society that he urged people to shun. Vices such as gender-based violence that Raila Odinga fought against for so long. Vices such as corruption and vices such as inequalities within the society. Many of the speakers who have come to the stage are talking about how as much as Raila Odinga was a king in the land, he knew the struggles of the common person on the ground. He knew the cost of food. He fought for rights. He fought for water access to the families. Many of the speakers who are coming are just heaping praises upon praises upon the former prime minister of Kenya and mourners here are gathered in numbers just to pay their final respects to Raila Odinga. Now it sort of is not surprising that the official speakers would say nice things about a deceased but we've seen such massive outpouring of grief over the last few days. Why is Odinga's death causing such an amount of grief? When William Ruto was giving his tribute to Raila Odinga two days ago during the state funeral, he said that Raila Odinga was once in a generation kind of a man that this generation and the next generations and the generations that have gone before him stand in awe about the achievements that Raila Odinga has managed to do for his country such as fight for democracy, such as fight for the common people. Raila Odinga sat in the boardrooms but also was in the streets where he endured tear gas. He was fought by successive governments but he stood strong for what he believed and many of the people who have spoken about him have said that Raila Odinga was the one person who did not let fear get in the way of him pushing for the rights of the people. However, Kenyans just went short of electing him as president but he held the highest post of prime minister post the 2007-2008 general election and that transformed some of the things that he pushed both for his region but also in the country and so many people are wondering who will even fit the shoes that Raila Odinga has left behind because apart from the fight for democracy he also built one of the strongest political parties in the country which is the orange democratic movement and many people are saying that it will be a huge gap that has been left behind by Raila Odinga.
