Traveling with pets over the holidays involves significant preparation to ensure their safety and comfort. Experts advise starting preparations early, including acclimating pets to carriers and short trips, and checking airline or boarding facility requirements in advance. 

A veterinarian visit is recommended before travel to confirm pets are healthy enough for the journey. Packing essentials such as medications, food, and identification, as well as maintaining awareness of pets' locations in unfamiliar environments, are key steps to keeping them safe during holiday travel.

There's a lot of preparing and work to be done if you're traveling with a pet. That preparation starts long before you leave home. Pets feel the stress of new places, new climates and long travel days, just like we do. You want to make sure that climate, that environment is welcoming to you and your pet. And also, not every pet travels very well. Some are used to it and some are not. Take them for a short little ride, five minutes around the block, see how they do. If they're not used to being in a carrier, they should be starting getting used to the carrier before the actual day that you want to travel. Flying requires even more preparation. You should call that individual airline and find what stipulations they have. First of all, what kind of plane it is. Will they carry that dog? Can I bring it on board? And if that's the case, you want to make sure that that pet is well-adjusted, because for the safety and comfort of the dog, but also your fellow passengers as well. Before any trip, a vet visit can confirm your pet is healthy enough to travel. And if you're boarding instead, choosing the right facility takes homework. Ask family and friends, your neighbors, where they take their dog. Ask your veterinarian. You should go there ahead of time and inspect the facility, see how they handle their dogs and cats. Packing the essentials like medications, food and identification is also important, especially when pets face new environments. You have to be very conscious of a change of environment, a change of climate. And during all the holiday chaos, he says awareness matters most.
