Karem Abu Salem has become the principal crossing for goods and humanitarian aid into Gaza after Israeli forces seized the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing in May 2024. The crossing is now under full Israeli control, and only a small portion of the required aid trucks are allowed entry. 

Other crossings, including Al-Awda, Al-Muntar, and Beit Hanon, remain closed or destroyed, while Kisafim is used solely for Israeli military operations. As a result, over two million people in Gaza face severe shortages of food, water, medicine, and fuel, with their access to basic necessities tightly controlled.

People of Gaza call their territory the world's largest open prison, as Israel controls all land, air and sea entry points. These crossings are not just borders, they determine movement and the fate of an entire population. For decades, Israel has restricted the movement of people and goods into and out of Gaza. These rules shape daily life here, and have been tightening since the 90s. In 2007, after Hamas won elections, they became more stringent. And since October 2023, Israel's chokehold has only intensified. Rafah was Gaza's only crossing, not directly controlled by Israel. It used to be a vital exit for people. Here the names were coordinated between Egyptian and Israeli intelligence. That changed in May 2024, when Israeli forces invaded Rafah and seized the Palestinian side of the crossing. Karam Abu Salem is now the main entry point for goods and aid, and under full Israeli control. But only a fraction of the humanitarian aid trucks needed are allowed through. Other crossings remain shut or militarized. Al-Awda has been closed since 2008. Al-Muntar, which once handled 220 trucks a day, was destroyed in 2011. Beit Hanon, which used to be a lifeline for work and medical care, is now sealed. The recently occupied Kisafim crossing remains open, but only for Israeli military operations. The impact is isolation. More than 2 million confined people facing shortages of food, water, medicine and fuel, and at the mercy of Israel for their most basic needs.
