A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for shooting an illegal firearm into the roof of his Condell Park garage and hitting his wife who was sleeping in her upstairs bedroom. She suffered catastrophic injuries leaving her unable to walk.

Kamal El-Jamal was sentenced to seven years in prison after shooting his wife, Georgia Varlos, with an illegal pistol at their Bankstown home. The bullet, fired through the garage roof, struck Varlos in the torso while she was in a bedroom above, resulting in severe injuries to her chest, spine, and liver.

El-Jamal initially claimed to paramedics that he found his wife injured, but security footage showed him fleeing the hospital. He was apprehended a month later by police and was on parole at the time for drug supply offences. Despite the injuries, Varlos has forgiven El-Jamal and requested his release to assist with her care. The firearm used in the incident has not been recovered, and El-Jamal will be eligible for parole in April 2028.

Dumping his wife at Bankstown Hospital, having just shot her and severed her spine. Kamal El-Jamal told paramedics he just found her like that as they rushed in and began life-saving treatment. He was then captured on security vision taking off. It was a month before police caught up with him in February 2023. Tactical officers swarmed a home at Picnic Point finding the then 33-year-old in the roof cavity. El-Jamal was today sentenced to seven years for recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and for firing an illegal pistol through the roof of his garage. The bullet struck his wife in the torso in the bedroom above. 37-year-old Georgia Varlos suffered debilitating injuries to her chest, spine and liver. My understanding is that that lady will likely not be able to walk and use the lower part of her body. The court heard El-Jamal's wife requires significant assistance with various aspects of her daily life but she has forgiven him and wanted him released to assist with her catastrophic injuries which he caused. El-Jamal was on parole after being convicted for illicit drug supply. He had shot up multiple rooms in the home with police finding 10 bullet holes. Judge Sean Grant said it is disturbing the firearm has not been recovered and remains in the community. It would have strengthened his discount and remorse.
