Justin Timberlake has publicly disclosed his diagnosis of Lyme disease, sharing that he has experienced symptoms such as nerve pain and fatigue. In a social media post, Timberlake described the illness as both mentally and physically debilitating, but expressed relief at completing his recent 15-month tour.

Medical experts note that Lyme disease is transmitted exclusively by tick bites, most commonly from the black-legged or deer tick. Symptoms can include fatigue, headache, joint pain, fever, and sometimes a distinctive bullseye rash. With no available vaccine, prevention relies on protective clothing, insect repellents, and thorough tick checks after outdoor activities. Experts also warn that climate change is contributing to an increase in tick populations and Lyme disease cases.

Pop star Justin Timberlake has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. In an Instagram post, he wrote, if you've experienced this disease or know someone who has, then you're aware living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically. Timberlake also said he's experienced nerve pain and fatigue, but is glad that he finished his 15-month tour. CBS News medical contributor Dr. Celine Gounder joins us now to talk about this. She's also the editor-at-large of Public Health at KFF News. Okay, so he's talking about nerve pain, fatigue that he's describing here. Is that the common symptoms? What are other symptoms associated with Lyme disease? Yeah, the most common symptoms people might experience, well, they might have the bullseye rash, this round rash that you might develop around the site of the tick bite, but not everybody gets that. So, some of the other common symptoms that you might get include fatigue, headache, joint pain, a fever. And in his case, he's mentioning having nerve pain and fatigue, which can be consistent with a Lyme infection in your nervous system. So, you know, it is certainly possible this could be that. So, tell me, you know, how is Lyme disease transmitted? Most commonly, we all think ticks. Yeah, so it is exclusively transmitted by tick bites, specifically the black-legged tick, also known as the deer tick. So, we often find them on deer, but not exclusively deer. It's also common to find them on your dog, your other pets, especially if you take them out into the park or into the woods. But any number of animals, including humans, can harbor those ticks. So, what do we do to avoid Lyme disease, and why are we suddenly seeing an increase in cases? Yeah, so it's not as easy as with some other infections. So, there's not a vaccine for Lyme disease. That would make life so much easier. So, you have to do a lot of other things. So, for example, clothing. You want to be wearing long sleeves, long pants, tucking your pants into your socks, light-colored clothing, so you can actually spot the ticks. EPA recommended insect repellents, like DEET, 20% to 30% DEET, or Picardin. You can also use permethrin on your clothing. And then avoiding places where there are ticks in the woods. You know? But what if they want to go on a hike, you know? Right, well, you know, I mean, it's sort of like, which of these things are you going to pick and choose? It is a menu of things. And then once you come back in, doing a full skin check, take a shower, throw your clothes in the dryer, because that'll kill off the ticks. Again, don't forget your pets. And then we are going to be seeing more and more of these tick bites because of climate change. So, it means milder winters, wetter springs, longer tick seasons. And we are seeing an increase in the number of people coming to ERs with tick bites. So, this is something, like, even if you didn't get a tick bite before, this is still something to pay attention to. You are going to be at increasing risk. I think that is the most important warning that you're sharing with us. Just because you haven't had the experience doesn't mean you can't have it in the future. Exactly.
