Elsewhere, Carlos Alcaraz endured a lengthy match against veteran Fabio Fognini, taking over four and a half hours to secure victory, and was seen assisting an elderly spectator affected by the heat. Stefanos Tsitsipas withdrew due to a persistent back injury, raising questions about his future in the sport.

Fighting back to win in five, it was a gutsy display. Thompson can't practice and is only hopeful of being able to play against Benjamin Bonsi. Alexei Poperin was seeded 20 but it was a short visit to the All England club, beaten in four sets by world number 461 Arthur Ferry. A horror day for Australia as Arya Tomyanovic's hopes disappeared into the sunset and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova winning in three sets. Carlos Alcaraz had his own problems dealing with 38-year-old Italian Fabio Fannini. Not all eyes on the tennis, celebrities central on centre court, the heat getting to an elderly patron Alcaraz ran over to offer water. Carlos taking more than four-and-a-half hours to put the match to bed. Stefanos Tsitsipas withdrew with a back injury, the ongoing problem has the 26-year-old contemplating retirement.
