The Sapporo High Court said on Thursday, quote, enacting same-sex marriage does not seem to cause disadvantages or harmful effects. But it dismissed the plaintiffs' claim for damages from the government. They are considering appealing to the Supreme Court to clarify the unconstitutionality of existing law, their lawyer said. In a separate ruling on Thursday, a Tokyo District Court also acknowledged the right of same-sex couples, describing the lack of same-sex marriage status in Japan as a state of unconstitutionality. Speaking outside the Tokyo court, Plaintiff Shino Kawachi is hopeful that the verdict will push for same-sex marriage to be legalized.
