A relative calm before the storm, but rainfall is increasing as Hurricane Melissa slowly creeps towards the Jamaican coast. People are scrambling to prepare for the storm. So we use plywoods to barricade the areas and sandbags to ensure that during the storm we don't have any issues of any debris going inside. Jamaicans are also stocking up on food. Some supermarkets have already been swept clean, leaving shoppers empty handed. I was hoping to get some bread, but the shelves are empty. Satellite images show the extent of the storm heading straight for the island. It's expected to be the most powerful hurricane to hit Jamaica since record keeping began in 1851. All of Jamaica will likely be affected by hurricane conditions, meaning heavy rains and winds above 100 miles per hour. It is also likely that hurricane conditions could linger over Jamaica due to the slow moving nature of this system. Given the extended days of rains leading up to landfall and the expected inundation from the actual passage, we can expect general flash floodings across the island. But it's not just Jamaica. Melissa is affecting an entire region from Cuba to Haiti and beyond. The Dominican Republic has been hit by outliers of the storm, causing torrential rainfall. A third of the country has been placed on red alert due to the risk of flooding and landslides. Some communities have been cut off and are being resupplied by drone flights. All before hurricane Melissa even makes landfall.
