Israel will allow as many Muslim worshippers to access Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem during the first week of Ramadan as in previous years, the prime minister's office said. "In the first week of Ramadan, worshippers will be allowed to enter the Temple Mount, in similar numbers to those in previous years," the statement said, using the Jewish term for the site.

Every year, tens of thousands of Muslims perform Ramadan prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem. This year, with war raging in Gaza, some Israeli officials had suggested restricting access to the compound, also known as the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism. But on Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said authorities would maintain the status quo and conduct weekly security assessments. We will do everything to safeguard freedom of worship on the Temple Mount, while appropriately taking into account security and safety needs, and will enable the Muslim public to mark the holiday. Israel's far-right National Security Minister slammed the decision in a tweet. He said Hamas celebrations on the Temple Mount are not compatible with complete victory. Itamar Ben-Gvir had previously said Palestinian residents of the West Bank should not be allowed entry to Jerusalem to pray during Ramadan. Days after those comments, the U.S. called on Israel to facilitate worshippers' access to Al-Aqsa. Despite Netanyahu's announcement, Palestinians fear provocations and threats by Jewish extremists around the compound. Clashes often occur there during times of regional tensions. Last year during Ramadan, police conducted several raids of the site, and some were filmed beating Palestinians. The police said they were responding to rioting, and that some Palestinians had thrown stones at officers.
