The collection, totalling approximately 2,500 items, consists of documents, photographs, recordings, and personal effects gathered by Syrian intelligence, as well as objects taken from Cohen's apartment after his arrest.

The operation to recover these items was carried out by the Mossad and the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu viewed some of the recovered possessions together with Cohen’s widow, highlighting the importance placed on the return of the archive. The items had reportedly been stored in Syrian intelligence safes for six decades before being brought back to Israel.

Eli Cohen was sent by Mossad to Syria in 1962, where he adopted the identity of a Syrian businessman returning from Argentina. While in Damascus, Cohen developed relationships with high-ranking political and military officials and eventually became an adviser to Syria’s defence minister. He provided intelligence to Israel during his mission.

Following a coup in Syria, Cohen was arrested by Syrian security forces and later executed after a trial. His body remains in Syria, and Israeli officials continue efforts to repatriate his remains. Cohen's work is cited as significant in helping Israel prepare for the 1967 Middle East war.

Now the trove is back in Israeli hands and on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shed some of the 2,500 items with Cohen's widow. We conducted a special operation by the Mossad, by the state of Israel, to bring back his archive which had been in the safes of Syrian intelligence for 60 years. We brought it back to Israel. The Mossad spy agency sent Cohen to Syria in 1962, where he posed as a Syrian businessman returning to the country after living in Argentina. In Damascus he forged close contacts with the political and military hierarchy, ultimately rising to become a top adviser to Syria's defence minister while sending intelligence back to Israel. Two years after the 1963 Syrian coup d'etat, security services caught up with him and after a trial sentenced him to death. He was hanged in May 1965 and his body is still in Syria. We want him back. We're working on that too. Eli is an Israeli legend. He's the greatest agent Israeli intelligence has had in the years since the state existed. There's no one like him. Eli Cohen's Syria mission was one of Mossad's first major achievements and the intelligence he obtained is widely credited with helping Israel prepare for its victory in the 1967 Middle East war.
