The move comes amid strained relations between Israel and some of its partners following the Gaza War, and after Somaliland announced plans to join the Abraham Accords.

He held talks with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohammed Abdullahi in the capital Hargeisa. We agreed to work together to promote relations between our countries for the sake of mutual prosperity. It reflects not only political recognition but also a shared commitment to transform that recognition into a substantive, forward-looking, and strategic partnership. Israel is the only country that has formally recognized Somaliland's move to break away from Somalia, which described Israel's decision on recognition as an unlawful step and said Saar's visit was a serious violation of its sovereignty. Somaliland lies in northwestern Somalia, sharing land borders with Ethiopia and Djibouti. It also sits across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen, from where Iran-backed Houthis have launched missiles and drones at Israel since October 2023, when the Gaza War began. A Somali analyst tells Reuters that Israel's engagement was probably driven by Somaliland's strategic location, but that security coordination was possible without Israeli military installations there. Recognizing Somaliland also comes after the war in Gaza and policies in the West Bank have left ties strained between Israel and many of its closest partners. And last month, Abdullahi said Somaliland would join the Abraham Accords, a 2020 deal brokered by Washington that saw Gulf states the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain establish ties with Israel.
