This week marks the third anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini which sparked the youth-led Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran. In the face of injustice, Iranians across generations, especially women and minorities, rose up in a peaceful quest for human dignity and rights.

Mahsa Amini, who would have turned 25 this year, died after being arrested by Iran's morality police for allegedly violating the country's dress code. Her death led to widespread protests across Iran, with demonstrators demanding greater freedoms and chanting slogans such as 'women, life, freedom.' Authorities responded with a forceful crackdown, resulting in thousands of arrests, injuries, and deaths. 

According to Human Rights Watch, there has been little investigation into alleged crimes against protesters, and the United Nations has reported continued persecution of women, minorities, and victims' families. While mass protests have been suppressed, acts of civil disobedience, particularly among women defying hijab laws, persist as a sign of ongoing resistance.

Massa Jina Amini would have turned 25 this year but her life and future were cut short on September 13, 2022 when she was arrested by Tehran's morality police. They claimed she was violating Iran's dress code by not wearing a headscarf properly. Hauled away it's thought she was beaten unconscious. That very same day she was transferred to a hospital in a coma. Massa Amini would pass away three days later. Her death sparked protests first in her native Iranian Kurdistan and then across Iran. A movement was born. Chanting women life freedom thousands took to the streets against the repressive Islamic state. But a brutal crackdown ensued. Iran's revolutionary guards and security forces put thousands in jail. Maimed scores of youth and killed hundreds of others. The nationwide mass protests were squashed by executions and brute force. According to Human Rights Watch three years later impunity reigns. With little to no investigations into crimes against humanity or the torture, murder and rape of protesters. And earlier this year the UN's fact-finding mission found that the regime continues to persecute women, minorities and the family members of victims. But while the mass protests have been squashed acts of civil disobedience abound. In defiance women frequently break the hijab laws now. Refusing to wear headscarves especially in cities. It is just one sign that the regime has lost some ground. Many of the defiant say that now theirs is a quieter but ever powerful cultural revolution that is underway.
