Intense Israeli bombardment hits Gaza

A body is pulled from the rubble of a building, hit by an Israeli airstrike. Such scenes have become a regular occurrence in Rafah, Gaza's southernmost city. We were safe in the house and we heard the sound of a strong explosion which shook the area. We went to the place and found body parts on the ground, people hanging, as you can see, traces of blood. More than a million Palestinians are sheltering in the city, many of them displaced by the war. Israel has vowed to launch a ground offensive against Hamas militants in Rafah, despite mounting global opposition. The US and UN have warned that such an assault would lead to a humanitarian disaster. Further north, in Gaza City, this hospital is overwhelmed by casualties. The citizens went out in search of food, but they were targeted by the Israeli occupation in the industrial zone. All of this because citizens are in search of food to feed their children and to attain a decent and safe life. Food, water and fuel in the enclave are dwindling and very little aid has reached the north. We desperately need the conditions to get access every day, to be flooding this area with food assistance, if we're going to prevent famine, prevent further death, prevent wasting amongst children, prevent really the desperate situation that is already in place. The UN has warned that Gaza's 2.4 million population is on the brink of famine.

The US military has started building a large floating pier off Gaza's coast to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, the defence department has said. Ships will deliver aid from Cyprus to the pier where it will be loaded onto trucks to transfer across Gaza.
