Lightning lasts for less than a second, is only about as thick as a broomstick but burns hotter than the surface of the sun. CBS News' Dave Malkoff visited a Florida lab that creates its own lightning to help protect people against strikes that are more common thanks to climate change.

A laboratory in Florida is generating artificial lightning to better understand its effects and improve public safety. The facility, operated by Florida Power and Light, tests how electrical equipment withstands high-voltage strikes, simulating conditions that occur naturally during storms.

The initiative comes as lightning strikes become more common, with recent incidents resulting in injuries and fatalities. Researchers use controlled environments to stress-test insulators and other components, aiming to develop more resilient infrastructure and protect people from the dangers of lightning.

Inside a lab that's recreating lightning strikes

Lightning can be 300 volts. Lightning did strike Lake Murray, SC, sending nearly 20 people to the hospital. 22 year old Tajan Billiard was swimming when she got hit. It was very painful, almost like a bunch of tasers. Just kind of go off on you. Four days earlier, a bolt killed 29 year old Jake Rosencrantz on the beach in Florida, north of Kennedy Space Center. For his honeymoon, John Gomes saw it from the balcony. This bolt literally came out of the blue sky and hit this person. Florida is the lightning capital of the United States. That's correct, so it's a challenge that we have to deal with every single day. Florida Power and Lights Jack Ebel led us into a lab where the electric company creates its own bolts. This thing over here can simulate lightning. That's correct. So what you're able to see today was really a stress test to really ramp up the voltage and see how that reacts and see how that equipment responds. Behind glass, wrapped in a shock resistant Faraday cage and wearing protective goggles. So this is sunscreen for your eyes. That's right. We watched as operator Huigberto Flores tested how many volts three generators could send into a power insulator and still work for 80. That's what we're going to see. The little you hear like a boom 480. Boom. That was it, and he even let me charge up the coils. There you go. Don't get scared now. 350. 380. 446. I didn't break it, did I? You did not break it. OK, alright, we just put almost 500,000 volts. What is three times the rate of? Of the actual insulator, so it can take three times what he's writing for it. That's right. It's amazing that clouds can generate all that electricity just with static. We've seen a lot of things that Mother Nature has provided FPL over the course of a century now. So all these things can happen throughout the year within hurricane season and outside of it.
