Vishwa Srivastava, along with his partner, Vivek Kishore, watched with disappointment on Tuesday, as India's top court declined to legalise same-sex marriage, instead leaving it to Parliament to decide. When my constitution, the constitution of India, gives me certain rights and expects me to do certain duties, if I'm doing those duties, such as paying taxes, abiding by law, giving vote, if I'm doing those things, I'm entitled to the rights that the government, the constitution has promised me. I'm simply asking for those rights. I know that maybe it's gone to the committee now, so that can be a long battle. So it's going to take a long while, at least that's what I'm thinking. But I'm not losing hope for anything positive to come. The court agreed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government that the legislature is the right forum to rule on the matter and address what were called the human concerns of same-sex couples. The unanimous order by a five-judge bench was a huge disappointment for the large LGBTQ community in the world's most populous country. It came five years after the court scrapped a colonial-era ban on gay sex. There was no immediate response from the government, but Modi's nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party administration had opposed petitions to the court on the issue. Some members of the LGBTQ community were seen leaving the court in tears, but others, like Harish Iyer, were more optimistic. We did know that there will be some directives issued by the Supreme Court, and the directives have been very positive. Now it's left the ball on the court of the parliament, our parliamentarians. Asia largely lags behind the West in accepting same-sex marriage, with only Taiwan and Nepal allowing it in a continent where largely conservative values still dominate society.

Prospects for a Gaza ceasefire appeared slim as Hamas reiterated its demand for an end to the war in exchange for the freeing of hostages, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flatly ruled that out.
