Just days later, the U.S. imposed an additional 25 percent tariff, bringing the total to 50 percent. Trump's move has not gone down well in India. Russia is our friend. We buy crude oil, and we can't break our relations with Russia. Our country will not run according to Trump's orders. Our country will run according to what we want. America was never our friend, so this is all a gimmick. He is a bully. He is bullying the entire world. We will find some better alternative options to export. If not U.S., we have the rest of the world waiting for us. India benefits from discounted Russian oil by saving billions on imports and has justified the purchase as supporting its national interest. Prime Minister Modi, speaking at a public rally, indirectly hit back at Trump for calling India a dead economy. There's instability in the world economy. During such times, countries focus solely on their own interests. India too is on the path to becoming the world's third largest economy and must remain alert to its own economic priorities. As pressure mounts, experts say India needs to strike a delicate balance between its old ally Russia and its largest trade partner, the U.S. We don't know if after a few weeks, Russia and America don't land up with some kind of an agreement. There are uncertainties of American behavior, both vis-a-vis Russia and China and the globe. India has to move carefully, acknowledging the fact that this is a critically important relationship. But before you kind of take very drastic steps in response or as a reaction, you have to think twice and be careful in how you proceed. U.S. officials are set to visit India for closed-door trade talks in late August, while President Putin is also expected to arrive later this year.
