Nine baby seals that were abandoned by their mothers have been released into the Baltic Sea by scientists in Lithuania. The pups were found weak and starved, and were cared for at a special facility where they learned to feed themselves before being returned to their natural habitat.

The increasing abandonment of seal pups is attributed to climate change, melting ice caps, and declining fish stocks in the Baltic Sea. Although the seal population has stabilised somewhat following a ban on pesticides, the species remains vulnerable due to overfishing, pollution, and the continued impact of global warming.

A first dip in the Baltic Sea, this baby seal is among nine to be released back into the wild by these scientists where it will head out in search for fish. Abandoned in mid-March by their mother, the baby seals were found very weak and starved. They were raised in a special site of this Lithuanian port in preparation for facing their natural habitat. They know how to feed themselves, we've taught them that, but they still have to get used to the sea. Going back to it, it's a bit complicated. The number of abandoned seal pups is rising as global warming leaves melting ice caps and a higher concentration of seals perched on the remaining icebergs. Females are forced to raise their seal pups on land but often end up abandoning them due to not being able to recognise them among the large numbers of other seals. The pups are left exposed to predators, pollution, a risk of disease and often unable to find enough food as few as 5% survive in the wild. More than 80% of the Baltic Sea's fish stocks have been destroyed and the seals have nothing left to eat. But today their numbers have stabilised following a ban on pesticides in Lithuania. There are now between 50,000 and 60,000. But the population remains fragile, with other factors like overfishing also causing a decline of seals in the Baltic Sea.
