Does your stomach hurt? Roughly an hour after we arrive at Family Health Center in Douglas County, Georgia, so do Oscar Zabala Sr. and Jr. Do you feel like you're shivering? Any fever? Oscar Jr. is in 6th grade. He was fine when he woke up, but soon after was hit with stomach pain and nausea. Did you eat something this morning? Within minutes, he's with a practitioner and an interpreter. It's fast, thorough, and at a school. Family Health Center is attached to, and part of, Burnett Elementary School in the Douglas County School District. A child's health affects their education, and their education affects their health. For so long, the two rarely intertwined beyond the nurse's office. These days, phrases like chronic absenteeism, health care deserts, and achievement gap are common parlance in the discussion of education. School-based health centers are a common response. Everything that we do is to try to foster student achievement. Mitzi Teal is a director with Douglas County Schools. A lot of our children are missing school, or even our employees are missing work, due to having to take off to make doctor's appointments when they have sick visits or well visits. School-based health centers, or SBHCs, offer physicals, immunizations, eye exams, mental health care, sometimes dental care, and sick visits. Where's the pain? Your stomach? Your throat? Okay. At the turn of the century, barely a thousand SBHCs existed nationwide. Today, it's nearly quadruple. We wanted it to have that feel of a professional environment. Douglas County's clinic opened in 2016. Officials chose an old music classroom in the only elementary school with available space. In a district of 26,000 students, the clinic sees nearly a dozen patients a day. The challenge is the cost. The partner has to have the infrastructure to have their staff members here. School-based health centers aren't run by the schools. They require medical partners to handle operations and billing. In Douglas County, that's Family Health Centers of Georgia. And it's just the accessibility for the parents. Frederica Roper oversees their five clinics in three Georgia counties. Basically, all five of the communities are health care deserts. They don't really have a lot of pediatric health care in those areas. And the accessibility is like, very, it's none. Is something like this profitable on its own? That's a hard question. These are the treatment rooms, and as you can see, they are set up. Mounting evidence says SBHCs work. A review from the CDC found they increased immunizations and decreased hospitalizations. They survive largely off federal and state funds, as well as discounted billing from appointments. Do you feel dizzy? Which brings us to Oscar Zabala. Any headache? By appointment's end, he's not cured, but he is checked out. Take your height and weight, okay? At a place where health and education intertwine. Okay, you can step down.
